After Riot Cleanup Action

After Riot Cleanup Action

Hundreds took to their local streets to help clean up the aftermath of three days of rioting in the capital with 500 people congregated in Clapham junction alongside Boris Johnson - the mayor of London.

London's after riot cleanup campaign has been masterminded by 37 year old artist - Dan Thompson from Worthing.

Sophie Collard, a 24 year old travel writer from Kilburn, came up with the name for the campaign.

The campaign was also supported by celebrities, with Stephen Fry and Simon Pegg among those retweeting details of the campaign.

Musicians like Kate Nash and Emmy the Great were also instrumental in spreading the world together with Sam Duckworth who set up the campaign's twitter account, and was working on the ground in Hackney and then Clapham Junction.

By midday yesterday, the first cleanups had already happened, and research firm brandwatch said the hashtag had been seen on twitter 24,000 times.

By the evening, cleanups had happened in Clapham, Brixton, Croydon, Lewisham, Peckham, Isle of Dogs, Camberwell, Ealing, Bethnal Green, Bow, Hackney, Camden and Chalk Farm, with more planned for today.

The events have also led to the broom becoming an unlikely symbol for the capital's recovery.
